World War II RAF paint schemes

WWII RAF Day Fighter Camo Scheme (early)

Official Scheme: Dark Earth and Dark Green topsides and Sky lower surfaces

Suggested paints: Humbrol 29 (Matt Dark Earth) and Humbrol 116 (Matt US Dark Green) over Humbrol 90 (Beige Green)

Humbrol 30 (Dark Green) is often listed for this camo pattern, but is considered too bright for WWII schemes. Humbrol 163 (Dark Green) can be used as an alternative to Humbrol 116 (Matt US Dark Green). Humbrol 26 (Matt Khaki), Humbrol 118 (Matt US Tan) or Humbrol 119 (Matt Light Earth) can be substituted for Humbrol 29 (Matt Dark Earth). Humbrol 23 (Duck Egg Blue) can be substituted for Humbrol 90 (Beige Green) for the lower surfaces.

WWII RAF Day Fighter Scheme (late)

Official Scheme: Ocean Grey and Dark Green topsides with Medium Sea Grey lower surfaces

Suggested paints: Humbrol 106 (Matt Ocean Grey) and Humbrol 116 (Matt US Dark Green) over Humbrol 64 (Matt Light Grey)

Humbrol 64 (Matt Light Grey) is a substitute for the harder to find Humbrol 165 (Medium Sea Grey)

WWII Meditteranean Desert Scheme

Official Scheme: Middle Stone and Dark Earth topsides and Azure lower surfaces.

Suggested paints: Humbrol 29 (Matt Dark Earth) and Humbrol 225 (Matt Mid Stone) over Humbrol 89 (Matt Middle Blue)

These colours are approximations only. The recommended Humbrol 157 (Azure Blue) shade is WAY too dark for this scheme. RAF Azure Blue of the period is a sort of bright blue/lavender shade. However one source notes that these aircraft also has Light Blue and even Medium Sea Grey undersides in some photographs.

WWII Fleet Air Arm

Official Scheme: Extra Dark Sea Grey topsides and Sky lower surfaces.

Suggested paints: Humbrol 123 (Extra Dark Sea Grey) over Humbrol 90 (Matt Beige Green)
