2012 Sea Harrier Challenge

The Challenge

Ends 29th Feb 2012. The challenge is to build a 1/72 scale Airfix FRS1 Sea Harrier before the end of February. This version of the Sea Harrier is best known for its successful campaign in the Falkland Islands conflict of 1982 in the South Atlantic.

This is a friendly challenge, not a competition, so the aim is just to have a lot of fun building your kits. For more information, visit the Facebook Event page for this challenge. You can also preview the kit contents and instructions.

You can load, build and paint your Sea Harriers in any manner you see fit, and are encouraged to post photographs of your progress online. This started as a challenge between an old friend and myself, but I thought I would throw it open to everyone online who wanted to join in. Please pass this invitation on to anyone you think might be interested.

The Kit

While they dominated the hobby in the 1970's, Airfix failed to keep pace with modern innovations. Traditionally their offerings have lagged behind other scale model manufacturers, whose kits introduced recessed panel lines and multi-part slide moulds for more complex shaping of parts. However, this kit is one of the new toolings released since the company was taken over by Hornby, and addresses many of these shortcomings. There is more information in this review of the new kit.

I have done some research about different colour schemes for Sea Harriers, including what Humbrol Paint colours are appropriate. feel free to use this information in your build!
